Adam Trowler, 31, is everything you’d expect from a Snap-on man – hard-working, approachable and customer-centric. Since launching his franchise in Bootle, Liverpool, in October 2018, he’s utilised his skill-set to establish a profitable and scalable business. Less than two years in to his Snap-on journey, the young franchisee is ready for significant growth – and has big plans for his personal life, too. He’s proof that you don’t need automotive experience to be a success with Snap-on.
“In the 18 months that I’ve been running my Snap-on franchise, I’ve achieved more than I could have ever imagined when I was working as an HGV driver. If I’m honest, it’s transformed my life. I sometimes joke that I could be the ‘poster boy of franchising’ but, when you consider what I’ve achieved, then that starts to sound less cheesy. I’ve never owned a business and never worked in a sales environment but, here I am, as one of the rising stars of Snap-on.”
Before Adam joined forces with Snap-on – and even before his seven-year stint as a HGV driver – he trained as a joiner. That was when the entrepreneurial spirit in him first developed, as the young school-leaver dreamt of following in his dad’s footsteps.
“My dad owns a HGV workshop and I’d always admired his work ethic and success as a business owner. I grew up thinking self-employment was the way to go and always wanted to make my parents proud. I left school without many GCSEs, but my parents brought me up to believe you can achieve 99.9% of your dreams by simply working hard and putting in the hours. So, after leaving school, I trained as a joiner and started working for myself. I wrongly assumed that would offer a long-term career with great earning potential but that wasn’t meant to be.
“I got a job doing the HGV driving as a stop-gap until I found what I was looking for. And when I say stop-gap, I really mean that – it was the same mundane thing every day. It didn’t matter how hard I worked; the results were the same. I wanted to do something where the harder I worked the more there was to be gained. I never lost sight of the advice my parents gave me – work hard and reap the rewards. I needed to find an opportunity that would shatter that glass ceiling, once and for all. As luck would have it, it was around that time that the local Snap-on territory came up for sale.”
Snap-on is the world’s number one professional tool brand. We are the leading global manufacturer and distributor of tools for the professional technician. Franchisees sell the most sought-after tools in the industry and deliver outstanding customer service to technicians up and down the country. Our fantastic business opportunity offers you the chance to be your own boss whilst being supported by an elite team of industry specialists.
“The Snap-on man in my area came for his weekly visit to the HGV workshop and explained that the territory was available to buy. You can bet I was straight on the phone to the franchise team! I’d grown up knowing of Snap-on, as my dad has always said they’re the best tools in the business, so I knew the products were in demand. The way I saw it, investing in a franchise of my own would offer the earning potential I craved and an environment where hard work is celebrated.
“During my initial meeting with the franchise team, I brought a secret weapon along with me – a notepad filled with questions! Snap-on were impressed with the initiative I demonstrated and, if I’m honest, I don’t think they were expecting it. Investing in a franchise is a two-way street – I wanted to ask them as many questions as they wanted to ask me. It’s a partnership and the best partnerships are built on transparency. This spoke volumes to the franchise team, who quickly welcomed me into the network. But before I was let loose on the road, so to speak, I travelled to the US for my training.”
Training starts with ten days of classroom-style training in the US. Afterwards, franchisees visit our UK head office in Kettering to meet the staff who will support them on a daily basis and collect their very own custom-built mobile store! Once out on the road, one-to-one training continues with a dedicated Franchise Developer who rides with franchisees for their first five weeks. As part of a six-month intensive onboarding process, new franchisees receive a further 31 days of on-van support from a Sales Developer and Business Manager over the following five months. That’s 51 contact days in the first six months!
Once out on the road, Adam soon found his feet with his regular route of customers and the back-of-house admin.
“It didn’t take long for me to feel that sense of career satisfaction I’d been missing for over ten years. I was having a great time bonding with my customers and enjoyed making the most of the additional income with my wife, Caroline. A real sign of how quickly the franchise took off was the fact that I paid off my initial start-up loan in less than a year – six years before the final payment date! That’s one of the best things about being a part of the Snap-on franchise network. The support you get in terms of managing your finances is second to none and, as I’d never owned my own business before, that was invaluable. They even help you fund the franchise – what more could you ask for?”
Snap-on are one of the only franchisors in the UK able to help our franchisees to fund the purchase of the business. We do this through our in-house bank, Snap-on Finance. This fully regulated, government approved finance house eliminates the need for the High Street banks. And, after all, who better to invest in your franchise with you than your franchisor?
As a fully-fledged entrepreneur, Adam is revelling in the professional and personal milestones he’s achieved, with Caroline by his side.
“In 2019, I went on three holidays. Don’t get me wrong, I work extremely hard to afford the time away from my business, but that’s because I’m constantly motivating myself to be better, strive for more and make every second count. Caroline and I are also about to invest in a property portfolio of our own, which is something I’ve wanted to do for as long as I can remember. Thanks to my earnings as a franchisee, I’m living out what I once thought was a pipe-dream. I even have the disposable income to invest in my obsession with cars, having treated myself to more than a few of late – Caroline is forever telling me ‘enough now.’ Although that’s more for a lack of space, as opposed to a lack of disposable income!
“And to top it all off, I was awarded the Snap-on regional ‘Rookie of the Year’ for my achievements during my first year on the road. I’ve developed this thriving business in such a short amount of time that my feet have hardly touched the ground. Now, I’m looking to employ an assistant to support in the operations of the franchise. Once they’re established, I’ll be looking to becoming a multi-unit franchisee. I still can’t quite believe that I’ve achieved all this, less than two years in. Not bad for a guy with no real automotive experience!”
